My whole life I've always been a little more robust than the rest of the people my age. Having broad shoulders, a barrel chest, round belly, giant calves, and a ginormous head all accounted for me just being a big bigger than most. I know first hand how it feels to change people opinion of you just by your performance. There were times as a kid that people were amazed that I could move the way I did and get around as quickly as I did. Heck from baseball, to soccer, to kickball, to softball, football, wrestling, and dancing, yep even dancing, this big boy right here could really move. I would hear things like, "Wow, I never saw that coming" or "Man, you move fast", quite regularly. To me, these types of statments always made me feel a little proud becaue even though I wear a bigger pants size than most of the other folks, I can still blow their minds with my amazing ninja, spin, juke, side to side, head fake double end around swerve move!
So now I'm all grown up, I have a family of my own, a job, a house, and so many of the things that every person wants to have. I'm proud of my accomplishments, my failures, my fears, my hopes, my dreams, and the life that I lead. You see, each accoplishment along with each fear and failure are what add up to make me the man that I am today. So, it's in that frame of mind that I soldier on every day, doing the best that I can to be the best that I can. I may still be fat but I'm also athletic and in my book being FATLETIC just means that you are willing to get up and move and take those steps towards a healthier life.
Alright, let's jump right into this and get the tough part out of the way. Before anyone jumps all over me and starts yelling about how it's not healthy to be overweight and what not let me go ahead and clear the air.
Fatletic Unlimited is not about living an overweight or unhealthy lifestyle. We are simply trying to open the door for so many people who feel that the only people in the gym are health nuts, or people with toned and perfect bodies. You see, that mindset is a real issue for people who carry a few extra pounds...don't believe me? Well, how do you explain the existence of places like Global Gym of Fitness Place? You see, no one wants to feel as if they are being judged when going to the gym, and being uncomfortable in your own skin is a big part of the problem. I look and see people get discouraged every day because they can't run as long, bike as hard, walk as far, or lift as much as some other person in the gym and this is exactly what we are hoping to eliminate from happening.
You see, we want people to realize that it's ok to be overweight and to be athletic and perform at the best possilbe level for your body. The key is getting up and moving, making a start, making a change, and making a difference. Being Fatletic is about having a mindset that it's time for a change, it's time to do something different and be a whole new you. It's not about changing your body over night, or being a size 2, or comparing yourself to anyone else. Being Fatletic is about makeing small, gradual changes in your life, but at the same time being proud of even the smallest accomplishments in your life towards your health.
We know (because science has proven it) that being overweight can come with all sorts of health problems and we want to help people overcome those issues. But what needs to happen is we need to remove the stigma that overweight people are lazy, pathetic, non-athletic souls. That sterotype just isn't accurate, I know so many folks who give their all at the gym, on the basketball court, on the track, or even around the block, who are overweight and far from lazy.
